Domaine Berrien Cellars

Description

Domaine Berrien Cellars began in 1992 when Tom and Abigail Fricke acquired an 80-acre tart cherry farm in Berrien County, Michigan. Tom, nearing retirement, sought to devote more time to his interests in growing grapes and making wine. Through research and travel, Tom identified similarities between Berrien County and the Northern Rhone of France, leading him to believe that Rhone varieties such as Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne could thrive in the area. The transition from cherry trees to grapevines was initiated, with planting occurring gradually over the years.

During this period, Tom and Abigail’s daughter and son-in-law, Katie and Wally Maurer, split their time between their corporate careers in Chicago and assisting on the farm. Wally and Tom, having previously made small batches of wine as a hobby, began selling grapes to local wineries as production increased.

In 2001, Wally and Katie pursued their dream of owning a business by establishing Domaine Berrien Cellars, a boutique winery focusing on estate-grown wines.

After more than 20 years of operation, Wally and Katie transitioned the winery to Amy Birk and Jacob Nivison in 2022. Jacob, with a degree in Enology and Viticulture from California Polytechnic State University and a decade of experience in vineyards and wineries in Germany, California, and Michigan, brings extensive expertise. Amy, holding a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Marquette University and a background as a professor in Lake Michigan College's Wine & Viticulture program, complements the team. Together, Amy and Jacob aim to continue the legacy of Domaine Berrien Cellars, building on the foundation established by the previous generation.
