Lemon Creek Winery

Description

History

Lemon Creek Winery is a family-owned estate winery in Berrien Springs, southwestern Michigan, with agricultural roots dating back to the 19th century. The Lemon family settled in Berrien County in 1834 and established a fruit farm along Lemon Creek Road by 1855. The road and nearby creek were even named after Benjamin Lemon’s historic sawmill, giving the winery its name. Building on over a century of farming heritage, Helen and Robert Lemon opened the winery in 1984, making Lemon Creek a pioneer in Michigan’s wine industry as they planted the state’s first commercial Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the mid-1980s.

Over the decades since its founding, Lemon Creek Winery has remained family-operated and achieved numerous milestones. The estate’s wines have earned national and international acclaim, including gold medal awards for varietals like Gewürztraminer and the rare Carmenère at prestigious competitions such as the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. What began as a small farm has grown into one of southwest Michigan’s largest vineyard and fruit farm operations. Today, the Lemon family carefully manages about 170 acres of wine grapes and approximately 60 acres of orchards on the historic farm. This enduring legacy—over 165 years in the making—highlights the family’s passion for the land and the art of winemaking, passed down through generations. The winery continues to be a cornerstone of the local wine region, blending tradition with steady innovation as it moves forward.

Winemaking

Lemon Creek Winery’s winemaking philosophy centers on estate-grown quality and a blend of traditional know-how with modern techniques. Every wine is crafted on-site from grapes that are grown, harvested, fermented, and bottled at the estate. This “vine-to-bottle” control allows the winemakers, many of whom are Lemon family members, to supervise each step of production closely, ensuring consistency and excellence. Generations of grape-growing experience guide their decisions in the cellar, but they also embrace contemporary winemaking science to bring out the best in each varietal. The result is wines that express the character of the fruit and land, with a commitment to quality evident in each bottle.

In practice, Lemon Creek employs a range of techniques to produce their diverse wine styles. For example, robust red wines are often oak-aged, with some premium reds resting in large French oak puncheons for 18 months or more to develop complexity and smooth tannins. At the same time, fresher styles like their stainless-steel Chardonnay emphasize pure fruit flavors and crispness. The winemakers aren’t afraid to innovate, producing an orange wine, a skin-fermented Gewürztraminer that gives a white wine an amber hue, as well as a celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon Ice Wine, an unusual sweet red ice wine made from frozen Cabernet grapes. Their portfolio spans from dry, traditional varietals to sweet fruit wines, reflecting a goal of offering something for every palate. This balance of authenticity and innovation defines Lemon Creek’s approach: honoring old-world winemaking traditions while also exploring new styles unique to their Michigan terroir.

Viticulture

Viticulture at Lemon Creek is shaped by the estate’s favorable terroir and the family’s long-term stewardship of the land. The vineyards lie in the Lake Michigan Shore wine region, benefiting from rolling clay-loam hills and the tempering microclimate of Lake Michigan. The lake’s influence extends the growing season and protects vines from extreme cold, which is crucial in Michigan. These conditions allow Lemon Creek to successfully grow classic European (Vitis vinifera) grape varieties in a Midwest climate. The winery was a pioneer in premium grape cultivation in Michigan, notably planting Cabernet Sauvignon when it was unheard of locally, and has since proven that many fine wine grapes can thrive here. The Lemon family currently stewards approximately 170 acres of vineyards, applying generations of farming knowledge to maintain healthy vines and soils. As multi-generational farmers, they emphasize sustainable practices such as careful soil management and integrated pest control to ensure the vineyard’s productivity for future generations. The estate’s vines are all hand-tended, and the grapes are exclusively estate-grown, reflecting a commitment to quality and consistency from the field to the bottle.

Grape Varieties

Lemon Creek cultivates a remarkable range of grape types, leveraging both traditional and hybrid varieties suited to Michigan’s climate. Their red vinifera grapes include Bordeaux-origin varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and the rarer Carmenère, as well as Pinot Noir, Malbec, Syrah (Shiraz), and Zinfandel. Many of these, such as Cabernet and Merlot, are French red varietals that the winery specializes in. For white grapes, the vineyards grow Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio/Gris, Pinot Blanc, and several aromatic German-style whites such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and the less-common Kerner. The Lemon family has also planted French-American hybrids like Seyval Blanc, Vignoles, Traminette, Chancellor, and Chambourcin, which are well-adapted to the local conditions and often used in their sweet and rosé wines.

This diverse viticultural lineup showcases Lemon Creek’s willingness to explore what grows best in their terroir—from classic noble grapes to innovative varietals for the region. By cultivating such a breadth of varieties, the winery can produce everything from dry, robust reds to crisp whites, sparkling wines, and even fruit-based wines, all from their own land. The emphasis on estate-grown fruit not only ensures quality control but also underscores a sustainable farm philosophy: the winery fully utilizes its vineyard and orchard output with minimal reliance on outside sources, carrying forward the family’s 165+ year legacy of working their land responsibly.

Wines

Lemon Creek Winery offers an extensive portfolio of wines, producing around 30 different wines annually. All wines are made from the family’s 100% estate-grown grapes and fruits, showcasing the diversity of their vineyard. Key categories of Lemon Creek’s wines include:

Dry Red Wines: Focusing on classic French-origin red varietals, the winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Malbec, and Syrah (bottled as Shiraz), often released in both regular and reserve bottlings. Their Bordeaux-style Meritage blend combines several estate red grapes, highlighting the depth of their red wine program. Lemon Creek was the first Michigan winery to plant Cabernet Sauvignon vines and continues to push boundaries by growing rare grapes such as Zinfandel, a true rarity in Michigan, and Carmenère, a nearly extinct Bordeaux varietal. These estate reds are typically medium- to full-bodied, aged in oak barrels for structure and complexity, and have garnered multiple gold medals over the years.

Dry White Wines: The winery produces a wide range of white wines, from light and crisp to rich and aromatic. Chardonnay is made in two styles: unoaked stainless steel for fresh citrusy notes and an oak-aged Reserve for a fuller, textured profile. Other dry whites include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, and Dry Riesling. The winery is known for aromatic whites such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer, which thrive in their vineyards’ microclimate. They also cultivate the rare Kerner to create unique offerings, while hybrid grapes like Seyval Blanc contribute complexity to their dry white blends. Crafted to be food-friendly, these whites reflect the estate’s mineral-rich soils with clean flavors and balanced acidity.

Rosé & Sparkling Wines: Lemon Creek produces refreshing rosé wines and traditional method sparkling wines from its estate grapes. Their Compass Rosé is crafted using the French saignée method with Bordeaux-varietal juice, yielding a dry rosé with lush berry flavors. Additional offerings include a Pinot Noir Rosé and other seasonal pink wines, ranging from bone-dry to semi-sweet. In the sparkling category, the winery produces brut sparkling wines featuring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Their Blanc de Blancs, made from Chardonnay, and Blanc de Noirs, made from Pinot Noir, are both crafted in a Champagne-style brut, delivering fine bubbles and elegant fruit notes.

Dessert & Fruit Wines: Taking advantage of both their vineyards and orchards, Lemon Creek crafts a variety of sweet wines and fruit-based specialties. Their Late Harvest and Ice Wines showcase naturally concentrated sweetness, including Northern Lights, a late-harvest Vignoles with honeyed citrus notes, and Snow Moon, a classic ice wine with lush pear and honey tones. The winery also offers rosé ice wines like Blood Moon, featuring candied fruit flavors, and New Moon, a deep red ice wine made from Chancellor grapes, yielding a smooth, dessert-style red. Additionally, Lemon Creek produces 100% fruit wines using their orchard’s fresh produce. Popular choices include Cherry Wine and sparkling fruit wines like Peach Spumante and Raspberry Spumante, offering a bubbly, sweet, and aromatic expression of fresh Michigan fruit.

Each of Lemon Creek Winery’s wines, from the driest reds to the sweetest fruit wines, is made with pride from estate-grown ingredients.
